Planning Your Kitchen Remodel; Learn to Measure

While it’s very important to trust the professional that’s planning and executing your kitchen remodel, it doesn’t hurt to understand how all of your estimates work. This will help you to have a grasp on the budget that your plans require.

Measuring your kitchen may sound hard. Kitchens.com offers a step-by-step guide to help you get accurate measurements for your kitchen remodel. Don’t include furniture or cabinet measurements that will not be kept after your kitchen remodel and note all measurements in inches, rather than feet.

STEP 1

Draw a rough sketch of your kitchen. Be sure to use symbols to indicate which way your doors will swing.

STEP 2

Include obstructions like radiators, pipes, sink plumbing, etc. that are considered permanent or that you’d prefer to keep.

STEP 3

A) Start at the top left of your drawing. Measure to the first window, door, or wall and continue around the room until all walls and openings are accounted for. The trim in doors and windows should be included in their measurement, so measure from the outside of one side of trim to the outside of the other.

B) Note the ceiling height in the center of your drawing. Take measurements in a few different areas of the kitchen. Especially in old homes, ceiling heights can vary by inches.

C) Measure from the floor to the bottom of each window.

STEP 4

A) Label your windows as “Window #1”, “Window #2”, on your drawing, starting at the top left and moving clockwise.

B) Do the same (above) for your doors.

C) Note the adjacent room next to each wall. Write “exterior wall” for any outside walls.

STEP 5

A) Measure any obstructions and how far they come off of the wall.

B) Measure from the second closest wall to the edge of the obstruction.

C) Measure the height of the obstruction if it does not run floor-to-ceiling.

FINALLY

Check all measurements. If your kitchen is a rectangle, add the measurements of the parallel walls. Do your measurements for your top wall and bottom wall match?
