Stainless Steel comes in flat sheets that can be glued or screwed directly to the wall. It is heat resistant, durable, and easy to clean but you should never use common cleaners on your stainless steel kitchen backsplash as the buildup will eventually cause watermarks and fingerprints to become more prominent. It can also be dented or scratched.
Porcelain and Ceramic Tiles are affordable, easier to clean than most other materials, and extremely versatile. There are so many sizes, colors, shapes, and patterns to choose from. They can resemble natural stone or wood and are scratch, heat, and water resistant. If one tile in your kitchen backsplash gets damaged, it can be easily removed and a new one installed. Consider the color of grout that you should use for your kitchen backsplash; a darker choice will be best for a spill/splatter-prone kitchen.
Glass is a popular choice as it is durable, easy to clean, and easy to install as a kitchen backsplash. It comes in panels that can be glued or screwed to the wall. Glass does not have to be plain; you could mount a picture or artwork to the back of the glass or even paint the back. Tempered glass is less likely to scratch and it’s a good idea to have the edges polished first so that they don’t snag on anything during installation. Glass backsplashes have drastically decreased in price over the last few years.
Mirrored Glass has a reflective surface that makes the space look brighter and larger by bouncing light around. It’s wise to get the more durable tempered glass. Mirrored glass is easy to clean and allows you the ability to have a seamless look (panels can be 10 feet long). You can’t use it behind a gas range as the heating and cooling causes the tempered glass to expand and contract-eventually causing visible cracks behind the glass.
Polished Plaster allows you to choose from any color and texture. It just needs a wipe-down to be cleaned but if it gets chipped it can’t be repaired. It’s a good idea to add a skirting to protect the edges of this worktop.
